Necessary changes in healthcare
Primary care doctors should coordinate the treatment of their patients, even if they refer them to specialists. But, if they are to do that, changes in the healthcare system are required.
Primary medical care should be the source from which patients receive most medical advice. In Poland, patients are too frequently referred to specialists and hospitals. Economists, doctors and ministerial representatives discussed how to optimise the Polish system of financing primary medical care during one of the healthcare panels.
Sławomir Neuman, Deputy Minister of Health, admitted that the system of primary care requires changes. "However, I do not only mean a technical relocation of money from hospitals. First, we need to have an effective register of the insured, treatment standards and we also must create a system for assessing quality of treatment offered by primary care," announced the Deputy Minister.
